You will be aware of recent media reports regarding the presence of mineral oils in recycled cartonboard and the possibility that these can migrate into foodstuffs. A major source of these mineral oils is believed to be recovered newsprint, mineral oils being one of the components of some printing inks.

Whilst the presence of mineral oils and the potential for them to migrate into foodstuffs is undesirable, there is not yet a definitive view on the risk of this to human health. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is currently investigating this and is expected to report in September 2011.

Our producers have taken a number of steps to investigate and deal with the issue. These range from undertaking or commissioning product tests in respect of mineral oil presence and migration, to excluding newsprint based recyclate from their production processes.

In addition, there is a collective initiative within the manufacturing supply chain to reduce the presence of mineral oils in printing inks and associated production chemicals.

In the mean time our suppliers confirm that their products continue to meet all relevant EU regulations for food packaging materials. Should you need specific information for any of our ongoing product lines, please  do not hesitate to contact us.
