Walking in memory of family members - Danny Laing and friends

15th November 2018

Our Warehouse Operative, Danny Laing decided he wanted to be involved in a fund-raising event after experiencing first-hand losing a loved-one to Alzheimers. His Dad had the disease, as did an uncle and other family members. When a friend told Danny about the Memory Walk, a charitable event organised by the Alzheimer's Society he was keen to take part.

Danny, his friend Chris Ballard and Chris’ wife Sonia signed up for the four mile Abbey Park event a month ago and they were fortunate enough to have a dry, sunny day as they joined the many hundreds of people who took part in the Leicester event. Danny commented, “the weather was just perfect for walking, it was well-organised and a really fun day. It was very family orientated with lots of kids and dogs taking part and we were all handed a medal at the end. The walk was, of course tinged with sadness when we thought about the reason we were all there - but I’m definitely keen to take part again next year.” So far, Danny has raised £455 and there is more yet to come.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem solving or language. These symptoms occur when certain diseases, including Alzheimer ’s disease, damage the brain. People with Alzheimer’s also have a shortage of some important chemicals in their brain. These chemical messengers help to transmit signals around the brain and when there is a shortage of them, the signals are not transmitted as effectively.
