Inside Sales Exec, Steve Pincott raising funds for the British Heart Foundation

19th April 2018

On Saturday 12th May our Inside Sales Exec, Steve Pincott will join two former school friends Tom and Noel in attempting the London to Oxford Trek, a 100km (62.1 miles) walk taking in Windsor, Cookham, Henley, and Abingdon. The annual trek is organised by the British Heart Foundation and all the money raised by those taking part will go towards supporting the vital work of the charity, including transplants, babies born with heart defects, heart attack treatment and pioneering diagnostic techniques and treatments.

After registering at 7am the morning of the event, the trio will attend a briefing before starting the walk from Spelthorne Leisure Centre in Staines-On-Thames, walking all day and through the night- ending in Oxpen Meadows in Oxford. It’s anticipated the walk will take approximately 24 hrs and will involve around 145,000 steps along muddy paths, fields, tracks and trails.

In preparation for the trek Steve has been spending lots of time in the gym rowing, running and cycling as well as doing lots of walking and he says he’s feeling fit and ready. (this is the person who completed the Three Peaks 24-hour challenge and with time to spare!). Steve is keen to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation as his Mum, who was seemingly fit and healthy, experienced a heart attack and was hospitalised in 2001.

Should you wish to support Steve in his endeavours and donate to the charity his Just Giving page can be found at -

David Plummer from Newtown Printers raises money for charity...and gets fit in the process

12th April 2018

Last summer, when David Plummer's daughter Nathalie had a frank discussion with him about his weight and lack of fitness, the conversation turned to finding an activity that could help David get on the road to fitness. When David suggested cycling the idea caused some mirth in his off-spring and presumably this spurred him on to prove to his daughter that he was capable of long-distance cycling.

So back in August last year David began training in earnest; the goal being to ride 215 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon to Nathalie who is at Plymouth University.   The date for the four-day ride was set for Wednesday 30th May and luckily for David, two old school friends, Phil Smith and Howard Cooke, were keen to join him. And whilst planning to achieve his own personal goals David made the decision to raise money for Molly Olly’s Wishes, a registered charity founded in 2011 by Molly Ollerenshaw’s parents after losing Molly at a very young age. The charity provides emotional and financial support, where appropriate, to the lives of children (and their families) with terminal and life threatening illnesses throughout the Midlands and the UK. Both David and his friend Phil will be supporting the charity as it was set up by one of their closest friends from school.

When we spoke to David today he told us his training was going well with a 20-30 miles ride two evenings in the week and a 40-50 miles cycle ride at the weekend-the most challenging aspects being the cold temperatures and dark evenings throughout the winter months. For the event the trio will be using the ‘Cycle Streets’ website to plan a route away from the main roads and along canal tow paths and country lanes. David said the greatest challenge will be after Taunton when they face some hills!

We wish David and his friends all the very best for their ride and in their fund-raising efforts. Should you wish to support David in achieving his fund raising target you can do so at -   www.justgiving.com/fundraising/david-plummer3

Warren customer chooses BillerudKorsnäs White for luxury packaging

5th April 2018

When it came to selecting the best product for Lincolnshire based Kalas Packaging's new web-to-print e-commerce business, BillerudKornsäs White won the day. The new venture for Kalas goes by the name of Vanilla Reindeer and they believe they are the first manufacturer worldwide to offer personalised gift bags and gift packaging direct to the consumer.

Sales Director Matthew Evans said: “VanillaReindeer.com is very much in the mould of Moonpig and Funky Pidgeon but we offer a more sophisticated piece of gift packaging that can be personalised for a similar price to large greetings cards from other online retailers. We currently offer personalised gift bags, bottle boxes and greetings cards.  Once launched, the range will quickly be increased to include personalised wrapping paper, boxed chocolates, Advent calendars and Easter eggs.  Next year we plan to add personalised packaged gifts sets including beverages, confectionary and toiletries.”

Managing Director Jonathan Padley said: “We needed a superbly white, high quality product that had great print qualities and one that would suit our HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press. In the trials we conducted BillerudKorsnäs White proved to be perfect for our needs. It is very much our belief that our product is currently unique and being the first to market it puts us in the perfect position to become, and remain, market leaders for some time to come - in what is a very niche market.”

Manufactured at BillerudKorsnäs Frövi, Sweden, BillerudKorsnäs White is a specially designed multi-layered cartonboard with a fully coated surface and white reverse. Thanks to its strong, virgin fibres, the product gives optimal possibilities for creating and designing packaging for maximum functionality and strong visible impact. BillerudKorsnäs White combines high formability and an exclusive printing surface in a way that is unique on the market. The product is also ideal for health and beauty products and perfume and luxury beverages.

Educating the women of Ghana through Action Aid

8th March 2018

Warren has been donating to Action Aid for over 25 years now and we're keen to continue to support the amazing work the charity carries out in the West African Republic of Ghana. Violence in the home and child marriages have been a way of life for some families in Ghana and with the help of Action Aid change is happening. From the account we received in a letter through Action Aid from one woman who had experience of her own daughter being kidnapped-the people of Ghana are seeing that their situation can improve through the education of all. Although entirely coincidental, on International Women's Day-our article is well timed.

Below is an account from 40 year old Fredous.

“My name is Fredous Balali and I live with my husband and children in the Upper West region of Ghana. As a woman, before I married, I thought it was the norm for a man to beat and shout at his wife and children, it’s all I had known growing up, every family was the same.

But thanks to your support of the ‘The Next Step’ in Ghana, Action Aid has been able to establish and train Community based Anti-Violence Teams (COMBAT), one of which I am a member. Because of the training I have received at our team meetings, my thinking has changed.

With Action Aid’s support I have developed a strength that gives me the confidence to speak out against violence within the home and child marriage. Abiba Nibaradum from Action Aid asked if I would share my story with you, and explain briefly about the work of Action Aid’s COMBAT teams.

Each COMBAT team has seven members, who with the support of the local police, are trained in current laws like the domestic violence, marriage and children’s acts. Group members, including myself, then work within communities to promote and protect the rights of people, especially women and girls. There are 34 COMBAT teams in my region, we meet annually to discuss and share ideas, and review the impact of our work.

I undertook my initial training as a COMBAT member in 2011. I returned home with a greater awareness of my rights as a woman and a determination to help my community overcome gender based violence and child marriage.

At the time, on average, five girls a term were victims of child marriage. It’s whilst travelling to and from school that girls were particularly vulnerable to being kidnapped for marriage. Thankfully, I am delighted to report that my work to raise awareness among men and the negative affects of a child marriage has changed the trend for this hideous practice. To date we have rescued 27 girls, returning them to their families so that they can continue their schooling.

My greatest joy, working as a COMBAT member, has been the rescue of my own 16 year old daughter Adilata Balali, not once but four times. At 15 she was abducted by a young man on her way from school. When I heard what had happened I immediately went to his home and brought her back. This happened two more times, each time I found her and brought her home.

The fourth time my daughter was abducted I involved the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit of the Ghana police service. After listening to me they wrote a letter to the kidnappers summoning them to report to the police station with my daughter the next day. Thankfully they did, they were cautioned and I was reunited with my daughter. She remains safe with me and is currently in form two at Junior High School. I am filled with pride at what I did. I know that without Action Aid’s support I would never have had the confidence or courage to stand up against the men who kidnapped her.

Since the formation of the COMBAT teams, violence against women and girls is reducing. On behalf of women and girls from across Ghana, thank you for standing with us.”

If you have been moved by Fredous’ story, you too can support Action Aid. Their web address is   www.actionaid.org.uk

The Annual Bodie Hodges Sports Dinner

8th March 2018

It's been a while since we wrote about the Bodie Hodges Foundation and the amazing achievement of Bodie's family in raising money to fund a holiday home for families facing the loss of a child. In 2012 our ex-colleague Nick Hodges and his wife set out to raise money to provide a holiday home to give respite for families-after sadly losing their 10 month old son Bodie in a choking accident. In October 2016 they achieved their goal of creating a lasting legacy in Bodie's memory with the opening of 'Bodie's Boathouse'.

But it doesn’t end there……the fund-raising continues and next on the calendar is the 2018 Sports Dinner on Thursday 22nd March. This year’s star guest is the legendary boxer, Frank Bruno, along with Britain’s Got Talent star, magician, Jamie Raven. The event takes place at Walford Road Stadium, the home of Leicester Tigers.

If you would like to enjoy a great evening and help raise funds in the process, contact Paul Taylor on 0775 360 7641. Or email paul.taylor@bodiehodgesfoundation.co.uk

The Bodie Hodges Foundation is a Registered charity, number 1151053.

Newly formed Commercial Team

4th January 2018

We're pleased to announce the formation of our three-strong Commercial Team to support the demands of our growing business and expanding customer base. The three appointments come from within the existing Sales and Operations teams; Ben Ingall, Mark Medley and Andy White; all now reporting to our Managing Director.

Ben, who has been with the company 23 years, was formerly Sales Office Manager and he now takes on the role of Commercial Manager, Board. Mark, who was part of the inside sales team for three years, joins the team as Commercial Manager on the Paper side and Andy who is one of our long serving members of staff (just over 30 years) comes to the team from the operations side of the business. He takes on the role of Commercial Executive.

The team was formed from the desire to bring all things commercial into one department to provide a central point for all staff, suppliers and customers. The changes will result in a clearer line of communication with suppliers, streamlined purchasing and order processing and improved monitoring of stock levels to accommodate business growth and enable us to provide a fast reaction service to customers.

The restructure will also enable us to better report and analyse data and work more closely with the finance department.   The team’s function will also incorporate compliance responsibilities such as FSC, PEFC, Waste regulations and Corporate Social Responsibility for both Warren and our suppliers.

We wish the team well in their new roles.

New board swatch - and it fits in to your Warren swatch holder/desk tidy too

4th January 2018

We're pleased to announce the launch of our new board swatch; a superb range of 22 products from the world's leading mills- folding box boards, white lined chipboards, solid bleached sulphate boards, lined and unlined grades and speciality boards. All are PEFC, FSC Chain of Custody or Recycled with the exception of airfreshener and beermat boards.

We firmly believe we have the most comprehensive range in the trade and we’re confident we have the product to suit the most demanding of print jobs, and coupled with a service level second-to-none and instant real-time stock information we are ideally positioned to be your go-to supplier of choice.

Commenting on the launch of the new board swatch, our MD, Kieran said, “Given the increasing demand for high quality graphical and carton boards in the commercial print sector, we’ve updated our product swatch to give our growing customer base a simple tool to allow them to identify the right product for their jobs. The design chosen allows us to not only highlight an individual product’s suitability for print but also to demonstrate its own unique surface characteristics. This, combined with information on stock service, provides our customers with a simple yet functional and informative tool.”

Our mascot Starsky has become a permanent fixture in our branding and as you would probably expect, the dapper little rabbit features prominently on the new swatch-making it instantly recognisable. We kept the swatch the same size as the previous one so if you’re lucky enough to still have a Warren swatch holder/desk tidy from the last time we produced a swatch-you can replace the old swatch with your brand new one.

The 140mm by 90mm swatch cover was printed on Ensocoat 415 ums/330gsm on a Komori Lithrone 28, using a four colour process with gloss lamination. The heavier weight samples in the swatch were litho printed on a Heidelberg CD 102 using a four colour process and water-based coating. The other samples were printed on a Komori Lithrone 28 using a four colour process and seal varnish.

If you would like to receive a board swatch and samples just make a call to our Sales Team – 0116 232 4102 or email sales@warrenboard.co.uk

Swatches and samples of all paper products are also available on request.

Compliance with revised ISO 14001 Environmental standard

1st December 2017

One of the most widely used ISO standards has had a major overhaul with substantial changes required to meet the criteria of the ISO 14001:2015 standard. The new standard is designed to respond to latest trends and ensure its compatibility with other management system standards.

Although companies with the accreditation have until September 2018 to update their current 2004 version-we’re pleased to report that we are bang up-to-date and the all-important 2015 certificate now graces our reception room wall and is available to download from our website.

The latest standard places greater emphasis on the prominence of environmental management within a company’s strategic planning processes and performance monitoring. There is also a new requirement to ‘understand the organisation’s context, to identify and leverage opportunities for the benefit of both the organisation and the environment with proactive initiatives to protect the environment from harm and degradation-such as sustainable resource use and climate change mitigation.’

Operations Director, David Whitaker commented, “We addressed these substantial changes during 2017 with the assistance of Paul Burr from EnviAble Ltd (www.enviable.org.uk) and his support has certainly minimized the impact for us. It’s important to us as a business operating in this sector, that our environmental credentials are underpinned by a strong environmental management system.”

Supporting a local college with graphical board

2nd November 2017

We've been helping out a local college with material for their GCSE Art and Resistant Materials coursework for a few years now and when they contacted us recently to ask if we could continue to support them, we were only too happy to offer some graphical board. With tight constraints on local authority budgets these days and the juggling act head teachers have to perform-Craig Curtis, Hamilton College's Assistant Head of Faculty and Teacher of Design Technology has always been greatly appreciative of the support we can offer.

The 200 students in the year group are aged between 14 and 16 and they produce a range of designs such as toys, food items and electrical products; including phone docking stations based on a design movement from the last 100 years. The board is also used by students to develop and model their ideas in Resistant Materials, often using a laser cutter to make prototype components.

Martin Higgins, Warren Operations Manager commented. “We had some old stock that was perfect for the needs of the college and we were happy to help. They are always very appreciate of any support we can give and judging by the photographs they have sent, the students have produced some very impressive designs.”

Their finished designs are show-cased in school displays and on the college twitter feed. If you would like to see more examples of their work visit - https://twitter.com/HamiltonColleg1

Andy Wrigley, Sales Director set for retirement

28th September 2017

October 31st sees the end of an era for Warren with the retirement of our Sales Director, Andy Wrigley. Andy joined the company in May 1985 in a sales role and joined the board of Directors in January 2001. At the time Andy joined Warren had just relocated from West Drayton to the current Leicester base, although the company was to retain an office in the South. We sat Andy down with a coffee to talk us through his thoughts and feelings on the last 32 years of his working life.

Your greatest achievement?
Being at Warren for 32 years.

The most challenging times?
Three come to mind really; the Chilean earthquake of 2010 when we had tremendous difficulty is obtaining stock from the mills affected. Another one was the demise of our largest account in 2005 with the subsequent losses we incurred, and I would have to include Brexit and the challenges we are currently facing.

Your funniest memories?
In days gone by we played football matches organised by the Mayr-Melnhof Mill at their Eerbeek site in the Netherlands. On one such occasion we were given a tour of the mill prior to playing at a local pitch a short distance away. Not long in to the first half we all noticed an awful lot of smoke coming from the mill. There were some very anxious looks from the smokers in our team as they contemplated the cause of the blaze. Fortunately for them the cause was found to be an electrical fault and not their smoking activities, and I’m pleased to say there were no injuries (except on the pitch that day) and the mill survived relatively unscathed.

The most significant changes you have seen?
The ever-changing role I.T. plays in all our working lives. I would have to say the advent of smart phones and certainly email have made a huge difference to our working lives. I used to come back from holiday to the odd note on my desk from the Boss but now I check my work emails daily when I’m away but I would rather do this than come back to my inbox full of things I need to deal with.

How you’ve handled the run up to retirement?
To avoid that massive change from full-time employment to nothing I reduced my hours earlier in the year and began a three day week. It felt strange not getting up for work on that first Monday but you just have to adjust your mind and body to the slower pace and the extra time you have to do everything.

What immediate plans do you have?
I want to enjoy having the time to catch up with friends. I am often at my partner’s at the weekend and this has meant less time to see mates but I will have more time now. I am a frequent gym user and I plan to continue with that too but I will have the flexibility of going during the daytime too.

What long-term plans do you have?
I have an allotment, which isn’t something I ever thought I would have! I was never in to gardening but two older guys I know have allotments and when they heard of my retirement plans they decided to put my name down for an allotment and when a vacancy came up I thought why not? It’s been fantastic though; all the things I’m passionate about-fresh-air, exercise and tasty fresh produce. I enjoy cooking and to be able to pick vegetables and cook with them hours later has just been a joy.

I plan to contact a local hospice after having a leaflet put through my door and spotting an appeal for volunteer drivers. It will be nice to give something back. And who knows…I might even make plans to marry!

Do you anticipate having any difficulty in adjusting?
As the time approached I started to panic but I’ve got my head round it now and I think being able to reduce my hours was a big part of that.

What will you miss most?
The people. Without a doubt. The industry has changed hugely but it’s always been the people for me and I know I’m going to miss the interaction.  What I definitely won’t miss is the motorways and the traffic queues!

Will you be watching Warren from afar, and will you keeping in touch?
Yes-absolutely. I’ve made so many good friends along the way, I will definitely be popping in from time to time.

Do you have a message for your colleagues, customers and suppliers?
It’s been a wonderful journey…but like all good things, it has to come to an end. I would just like to wish every one of them happiness in life and success in business.

As well as Andy's retirement, we are also going to be waving goodbye to another colleague, our I.T. Director, Phil Richardson retires at the same time.

And finally sentiments from our Chairman, Barry and FD, Anne – “Words cannot express the devotion and loyalty these two pillars of the company have given at all times, they have always been hard working and great fun to be with and to top it all have become lifelong friends. They will be sorely missed by everyone.”

Our I.T. Director, Phil Richardson is soon to retire

28th September 2017

As if losing one long serving member of staff to retirement wasn't enough for us to cope with-we're having to say goodbye to Phil Richardson, our I.T. Director.....how will we cope! Phil joined the company in 1997 but we'd had the pleasure of getting to know him during the previous 10 years when he worked on a consultancy basis developing and supporting our systems. We sat Phil down over a cuppa to chat about the last 20 years.

Your greatest achievement?
Surviving!

The most challenging times?
Complete server hardware failure resulting in working straight through the night

Your funniest memory?
A salesman asking if we could fax samples!

The most heart-warming moment?
The company’s support during long-term illness

The most significant change you have seen within the company during your time here?
The addition of paper and converters

The most significant change in the industry during your years at Warren
Consolidation/shrinking of mill and merchant groups

The benefits of reducing your hours in the build up to the big day?
I worked on reducing my hours over a ten year period but it was only when I reduced to two days that it felt like I wasn’t working full time

Your feeling and emotions about retirement?
Work has been the thing everything else revolved around

What immediate plans do you have for retirement?
I have a big birthday coming up so lots of celebrating to do in November…and then there’s Christmas!

What are your long-term plans?
More of the things I already do-photography, rambling, dog walking, art, golf, holidays, gardening

Do you anticipate any difficulties in adjusting to a different life-style
I’ve pretty much adjusted with going down to two days

What you will miss most?
The people

Will you be watching Warren from afar, and will you be keeping in touch?
I expect to be back for the odd lunch to catch up

A message you would like to send to your colleagues
I can honestly say there has not been a day in my life when I woke up and thought ‘I don’t want to go to work today’, and for the past 20 years that has been down to my colleagues. So thanks - I’ll miss you all.

As well as Phil's retirement, we are also going to be waving goodbye to another colleague, our Sales Director, Andy Wrigley retires at the same time.

And finally sentiments from our Chairman, Barry and FD, Anne – “Words cannot express the devotion and loyalty these two pillars of the company have given at all times, they have always been hard working and great fun to be with and to top it all have become lifelong friends. They will be sorely missed by everyone.”

In memory of Chris Fryer

24th August 2017

Earlier this month we commemorated the untimely passing of a dear colleague, Chris Fryer. Chris worked in the role of Maintenance Engineer at our West Bromwich Converting facility, a position he held for some 15 years. Chris' colleagues didn't want the day to pass by without marking the occasion in some way, and befitting a man with the surname of Fryer the decision was made to indulge in that hearty breakfast fare....the fried bacon butty.

This was deemed to be a fitting mark and one that would take place each year from now on. Commenting on the occasion Bryen Humphreys, Divisional Director said, “I knew the first anniversary was coming up and I felt it was important that we didn’t let the day go by.

We used to laugh that Chris liked nothing better than a good old moan (and don’t we all), even when it came to the quality of his bacon butty – but he always went back for more! But Chris was a very generous man; he would do anything for you and that’s how we all remember him. Chris was instrumental in helping us set up the new Converting facility but sadly he never did get to see the fruits of his labours in the superb operation we established, as he became so ill.  We sent the photograph of us all enjoying our butties to Chris’ wife Carol and we received a lovely response from her. Chris won’t be forgotten”.

Warren have Performa Brilliance in stock now, available from 360 Mic / 230 Gsm – 585 Mic / 345 Gsm and sizes 450 x 640 mm – 720 x 1020 mm. Heavier weights for Performa Brilliance will also be introduced by Stora Enso later this year.

Commenting on the addition of Performa Brilliance to its graphical packaging board ranges, Warren’s Commercial Director, John Turner, stated, “StoraEnso have really raised the bar with Performa Brilliance in terms of whiteness within the GC1 market; StoraEnso describing Performa Brilliance as ‘the best ever GC1 board they have created’ is some statement and one that made this decision a very easy one to make. With the improvement in whiteness Performa Brilliance challenges some SBS grades in terms of whiteness but at the same time offers up to 22% savings in weight, making it a very attractive alternative in many ways.”

The Ensocoat Tour bus spends the day at Warren

6th July 2017

Last Monday we welcomed customers to our West Bromwich facility to see the Stora Enso Ensocoat Roadshow Bus and all that it had to offer. The Roadshow started in Dusseldorf early May, stopping off at customers' sites throughout Europe.

Guests were shown presentations by Bob Swallow, Stora UK and Ireland Sales Manager and Caroline Erikson, Product and Marketing Manager talking us through the improved Ensocoat and end-use applications. Everyone-staff and customers alike was invited to experience a virtual tour of pulp and board production at Stora’s Skoghall Mill in Sweden. The Innovation Centre section of the fully equipped luxury bus included demonstrations of squeezable tubes for cream and shampoo- replacing plastic as the preferable sustainable form of packaging and smart packaging able to connect mobile devices to further product information.

Guests leaving the tour bus were handed goodie bags full of beautifully packaged liquorice, luxury chocolates and giant fruit jelly balls.

While visiting the tour bus customers took the opportunity to have a guided tour of our converting facility. We had a full crew on with all the machines in operation that day giving our visitors an overview of the facility in action. Bryen Humphreys, Divisional Director commented, “It was a great opportunity for customers to witness the process from reel stock to palletised sheets, including some orders cut to customers’ exact specifications. We had a positive reaction from everyone with one customer asking if we could put paper through the rewind. It’s not something we’ve done before but we’re certainly willing to look in to the possibility. I think customers got a lot out of the visit and the staff enjoyed sharing their working day with them.”

One customer who came to the event and took the opportunity to have a guided tour of our converting facility - Alistair Nash, Director, Materias Sourcing Ltd commented, “The staff running this operation obviously think tidy. People who think tidy, are tidy; the plant looks organised and well run.”

If you were unable to make the tour but would like product information and samples, please call our Sales Team on 0116 232 4102 or email sales@warrenboard.co.uk
